Detroit techno music pioneer Jeff Mills has taken an unexpected leap into the world of fashion by starring in Jil Sander’s Fall/Winter 2023 campaign. Mills, celebrated for his groundbreaking electronic compositions, has always pushed the boundaries of creativity. This collaboration represents a fusion of music and fashion, transcending traditional artistic boundaries. The brand is known for its minimalistic aesthetic and commitment to timeless elegance. Mills’ inclusion in their campaign reflects the brand’s desire to explore unconventional ideas while embracing diversity. The campaign, captured by an avant-garde team of photographers, showcases Mills in sleek and understated Jil Sander pieces.
“The collection clashes genres,” said the husband-wife duo behind Jil Sander: Luke and Lucie Meier in a statement. “[It’s] a reflection of our desire to embrace information exchange, openness, and cross-pollination, to merge the archetypes of women’s and men’s wardrobes, to create a true space of self-expression,” they added.
Accompanying the sleek photos of Mills in structured and minimal suiting is a short film on his ruminations on music and fashion directed by Stephen Kidd in Manchester. Mills says in a clip: “As a musician, I can look at that, turn to music and think about the same type of topics: the shades, the colors, the textures and translate it into sound even considering the silence after sound.”
The fashion industry seems to be catching on to Mills’s prowess when it comes to his musical prowess. In recent years, he has created a soundtrack for Dior’s Fall/Winter 2023 runway presentation hosted in Egypt.
